Junk Removal in East Berlin, PA
A small Adams County borough on the York County line, with older homes, an older population and bulk pickup only when you ask for it.
Junk removal in East Berlin, PA means working in one of the smallest towns on our list: about 1,500 people on seven-tenths of a square mile. The borough belongs to Adams County but sits right on the York County line, with Reading and Hamilton townships on the Adams side and Paradise Township on the York side.[1][2]
Our base in York is 18.6 miles away in a straight line. William answers the phone, gives the price and is on the job himself, and the crew does the carrying from wherever the stuff sits, whether that’s the attic, the basement or the far corner of the garage.[2]

Older houses, longtime owners, full basements
More than a third of East Berlin’s homes went up before 1940 and more than half before 1960, with a median build year of 1955. About 63% are detached single-family houses. Put those together and you get basements, attics and detached garages holding decades of storage.[1]
The people skew older as well. Almost one resident in four is 65 or over, and the median age is 44.5. That number shows up as downsizing moves, a parent heading to assisted living, and estates being settled by family who may not live nearby.[1]
East Berlin’s trash contract and what it leaves to you
Since October 1, 2018, East Berlin has been part of a joint trash and recycling contract with three other Adams County municipalities, and the contracted hauler bills each household directly. Bulk trash, meaning large items like furniture, is picked up on request: you call or book it with the borough’s contracted hauler.[3]
Regular trash goes out Thursday (Friday in a holiday week) and must be bagged. A 2020 borough ordinance keeps trash and recycling containers at the side or rear of the property, and they go out after 5 p.m. the night before.[3]
Here’s the gap. Adams County’s 2019 waste plan says the county has no household hazardous waste program, and it refers people with large amounts of old paint to the York County Resource Recovery Center. We don’t haul paint, chemicals or propane tanks either, so those need their own plan before a cleanout starts.[4]
- Yard waste is limited to two bags per pickup, with twigs and branches trimmed and bundled.[3]
- Recycling is collected every other week, loose in the bin. Scrap metal, windows, mirrors and broken glass aren’t accepted.[3][5]
- East Berlin hosts one of the joint contract’s quarterly electronics drop-offs every December at Community Park. TVs and computers can’t legally go in Pennsylvania household trash.[3][6]
- Adams County’s Spring 2023 recycling brochure lists refrigerators and other refrigerant appliances under licensed Freon removal, with a fee charged.[7]

- Reading Township

The historic district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 according to Wikipedia, covers the borough itself; the three townships are its Census-mapped neighbors, with Paradise Township across the line in York County.[10][1]
What we haul and tear down in East Berlin
Whole-house cleanouts in an older borough
With nearly a quarter of residents 65 or older and most homes built before 1960, plenty of East Berlin houses hold one family’s whole life. Bulk pickup on request takes care of a couch at a time. Emptying a house is a different job.[1][3]
It starts with a room-by-room walkthrough, and anything you flag stays, whether that’s the cedar chest or a box of photos in the attic. Then we clear it top to bottom: furniture, closets, kitchen, basement shelving and the garage. Reusable items go to donation drop-offs, the rest goes to licensed transfer stations, and the house is left broom-clean. Most full houses take one full day; large estates or heavy hoarder situations can run two. We coordinate with realtors, estate attorneys, property managers and family, including relatives handling things from out of town.
Old appliances out of East Berlin basements
In a house built before 1960, the old appliances are usually downstairs: a second fridge, a chest freezer, a washer and dryer that came down the basement steps years ago. More than half of East Berlin’s homes fit that description.[1]
Fridges, freezers, dehumidifiers and window air conditioners hold refrigerant, and federal law bars venting it, so it has to be recovered before the appliance is scrapped. Adams County’s 2023 brochure sends these units to licensed Freon removal, and the borough’s curbside recycling doesn’t take scrap metal. We carry appliances up from the basement or out of the garage, load them and haul them off. Empty out the food first, and keep the unit upright if you move it yourself.[8][9][7][5]
