Junk Removal Across York County, PA
Twelve towns we serve, one county trash system, and housing that runs from century-old city blocks to newer southern-county neighborhoods.
Junk removal in York County, PA changes with the address. Clearing a place in York city, where about half the homes predate 1940, is a different job from emptying a garage in Shrewsbury or New Freedom, where the typical house went up in the mid-to-late 1980s.[1][2][3]
We’re The Junk Lord, locally owned and owner-operated from Druck Valley Road in York. William is a York County native and a Central York High School graduate, and he still answers the phone and prices every job. This page covers how the county handles waste and what that means when you have more than your hauler will take.

How trash works in York County
The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) doesn’t pick up anyone’s garbage. Your municipality contracts a hauler, or in a few townships you hire one yourself, and that hauler delivers to the York County Resource Recovery Center on Blackbridge Road in Manchester Township. The plant burns trash to make electricity and cuts its volume by 90%.[5][6][7][8]
Bulk pickup is set town by town through each hauler’s contract. A common version is one large item a week that two people can lift; York city allows up to five scheduled items a week, while Hanover Borough schedules and charges for bulky pickups through its Public Works Department.[9][10][11]
The county also runs on flow control. YCSWA’s rules require anyone engaged in collecting and transporting York County waste to register with the Authority, display its decal and dispose only at designated sites.[12]
- Small Load Drop-Off: York County residents can bring furniture, mattresses, extra trash, metal, yard waste, electronics and refrigerant appliances after checking in at the scale house. A fee applies to waste loads. Hours as of 2026 are weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon.[13][14]
- Electronics: free for residents at the Resource Recovery Center and at the Fairview Township and Penn Township recycling centers, with a limit of five TVs per visit.[15]
- Household hazardous waste: two collection events a year, one in spring and one in fall, free for county residents with registration required. We don’t take paint, chemicals or propane tanks, so these events are the route for them.[16]
- Tires: off the rim, no more than 32 inches across and 12 inches of tread, and up to ten at the Resource Recovery Center, where a fee applies.[17]
- Renovation debris: drywall, plaster and tile are taken at the Small Load Drop-Off only two 42-gallon contractor bags at a time, and concrete, brick and stone aren’t accepted there at all.[18]
York County homes and what they hold
Countywide, the median home was built in 1976, about 64% of homes are detached single-family houses, and fewer than a quarter of households rent. Detached houses come with garages, sheds, basements and attics, which is where most junk goes to hide.[4]
The county is getting older, too: 18.8% of residents are 65 or over. Downsizing and estate cleanouts follow that number. We do a room-by-room walkthrough first, keep anything you flag, take reusable items to donation drop-offs and leave the house broom-clean.[4]
How the York County towns we serve differ
Same county, very different houses and curb rules. The city and the older boroughs lean toward pre-war construction; the southern boroughs and the townships around Dover and Dillsburg lean toward newer detached houses.[1][3][19][20]
- York: about half the homes predate 1940 and fewer than 1 in 4 is a detached house; the city’s hauler takes up to five scheduled bulky items a week.[1][10]
- Hanover: the borough collects its own trash, and large items are scheduled and paid for through Public Works.[21][11]
- Red Lion: nearly half the homes date before 1940, and under the 2026 contract residents call ahead before setting out a large item.[22][23]
- Dallastown: more than half of households rent, and one large item goes out each Thursday.[24][25]
- Spring Grove: one bulk item a week, and trash is limited to what fits in the hauler’s totes.[26]
- Wrightsville: a borough authority collects trash, and large items go only on Fridays, arranged and paid for at the Municipal Office.[27][28]
- Shrewsbury: a median age near 52 and more than a quarter of residents 65 or older, in mostly detached homes.[2]
- New Freedom: 86% detached houses and fewer than 1 in 10 households renting.[3]
- Glen Rock: a small borough where nearly 4 in 10 homes predate 1940, surrounded entirely by Shrewsbury Township.[29]
- Dover: the borough is enclosed by Dover Township, where the median home dates to 1988.[30][19]
- Manchester: the borough and Manchester Township are separate places that don’t touch; the Resource Recovery Center sits in the township.[31][32][7]
- Dillsburg: enclosed by Carroll Township, where 88% of homes are detached houses.[33][20]
