Junk Removal in New Freedom, PA

One scheduled bulk item a week handles a recliner. A garage, a basement or a parent’s house takes a crew.

New Freedom’s curbside setup is built for one thing at a time. The borough’s contracted hauler takes a single bulk item per week, and every one of those pickups has to be scheduled ahead of time. That covers a dead dishwasher just fine. It doesn’t cover twenty years of a two-car garage.[1][2][3]

That’s the work we do. The Junk Lord handles junk removal in New Freedom, PA the same way we do it everywhere: William answers the phone, William gives you the price, and William is at your door on the day of the job with a two-person crew. The borough sits about 20 miles straight-line from our base on Druck Valley Road. Text him a few photos at (717) 654-6138 for a free quote.[4]

Newer single-family houses, and the garages and basements that come with them

New Freedom isn’t an old row-house borough. The median home here was built in 1989, only about 8 percent of homes date to before 1940, and roughly 86 percent are single-family detached houses. When a house like that fills up, the overflow lands in the garage, the finished basement and the shed out back.[5]

Fewer than 1 in 10 households here rent, while about 1 in 5 residents is 65 or older. Put those two numbers side by side and you get a town where a big cleanout usually means an owner who has lived in one house for a long time and is getting ready to downsize, or a family settling an estate, rather than a landlord turning over an apartment.[5]

What New Freedom’s trash and bulk rules cover, and where they stop

Trash goes in a 96-gallon cart and recycling in a 64-gallon cart, both collected Fridays, and as of 2026 the carts need to be at the curb by 6:00 AM. Everything has to fit inside the carts. The borough’s current hauling contract runs through the end of 2027.[3][1][6]

Bulk pickup is one item per week on Friday, booked in advance. Here is how the rules shake out for a homeowner:[1][2][3]

  • Accepted as a bulk item: appliances (Freon appliances included), furniture, mattresses and box springs, one car tire off the rim, lawn mowers drained of oil and gas, toilets and sinks, and up to three tied 4-foot rolls of carpet.[3]
  • Not accepted: chemicals, stains, liquids, batteries, auto parts, hazardous waste, tires on rims, and construction materials like drywall, brick, block, lumber, shingles, tiles and concrete.[3]
  • Anything too heavy for two people to lift into the truck gets left behind, and extra trash bags don’t count as your bulk item.[3][6]
  • Cabinetry, flooring and drywall from a project never go at the curb; the borough points residents to its hauler or the York County Solid Waste Authority instead.[6][2]
  • The county’s Small Load Drop-Off at the Resource Recovery Center on Blackbridge Road takes furniture, mattresses and overflow trash from residents who haul it themselves, with a per-ton fee on waste loads.[7][8]

Neighborhoods and nearby townships

  • Shrewsbury Township
  • Hopewell Township

Census boundary and ZIP data show Shrewsbury Township bordering the borough and covering most of the 17349 ZIP’s land, with Hopewell Township holding the next-largest share.[12][5]

What we haul and tear down in New Freedom

Brush and limbs that don’t fit New Freedom’s limb-tag rules

The borough’s Public Works crew picks up tree limbs on set Tuesdays in April, May, June, September and October. Each pile needs a limb tag from the borough office, the pieces have to be 3 to 6 feet long and no thicker than 6 inches, and they go out loose with the cut ends facing the street. Bundled limbs get skipped. Leaves are collected weekly from the last Monday of October through the first Monday of December, in a loose pile with no bags or tarps.[9][10][11]

Good program. But a 12-foot limb in July, or a hedge row you ripped out over Labor Day weekend, falls outside both the calendar and the size limits. We load brush, branches and old landscaping straight from where it sits. One line we hold firm on: we’re not arborists. We take limbs and trees that are already on the ground. Standing trees, trimming and stump grinding go to a certified arborist.

Clearing a long-held New Freedom house

With about a fifth of residents 65 or older, plenty of New Freedom houses will change hands after decades with one owner. Do the math on one bulk item a week and a full house takes a year of Fridays, and the kitchen cabinets or basement paneling can’t go at all.[5][3][6]

A whole-house cleanout with us starts with a room-by-room walkthrough. Anything you flag stays put. Reusable furniture and household goods go to donation drop-offs, the rest gets loaded across as many truck loads as it takes, and we finish broom-clean. If a realtor, an estate attorney or a sibling three states away is part of the plan, we’ll coordinate with them. Most full houses take one full day; a large estate can run two.
