Old houses and long-time residents

Marietta Borough's housing is older than nearly anywhere else we work. Sixty-six percent of its homes were built before 1940, and about three-quarters before 1960. Houses that age collect a lot of living: steamer trunks under the eaves, shelves of canning jars in the cellar, a workbench nobody has cleared since the last owner.[2]

The borough's population skews older too. About 28 percent of residents are 65 or over, and the median age is 45.5. That tends to mean downsizing moves and estates, and families who need a house emptied once and carefully, with the things that matter set aside before anything goes on the truck.[2]

Fewer than a third of homes (29.5 percent) are single-family detached, and roughly 38 percent of households rent, so plenty of jobs here involve shared walls, apartment stairs and move-outs.[2]

Marietta's sticker system for trash, bulk items and yard waste

Marietta runs its own weekly Thursday trash and recycling program through the borough's contracted hauler. Extra-bag, bulk and yard-waste stickers are sold at the Borough Office.[3]

A 60-pound limit covers a kitchen chair or a small loveseat. It won't cover a solid oak dresser, a sleeper sofa or the upright freezer in the basement, and two stickered pieces a week won't empty a house before settlement.[3]

  • Regular trash is capped at three bags or cans of up to 32 gallons a week. More needs a paid sticker, and every receptacle needs handles.[3]
  • Sofas, chairs, mattresses and similar pieces of up to 60 pounds can go out with weekly trash if each one wears a red bulk sticker, two per week at most.[3]
  • White goods (appliances over 50 pounds, such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, stoves, water heaters, air conditioners and furnaces) and tires are collected only on two bulk pickup dates a year, each item with a sticker. Check with the Borough Office for this year's dates.[3]
  • In 2026, grass, leaves and weeds (no woody material) are picked up every other Thursday from April 2 through October 1 in Kraft bags with an orange sticker. Bagged leaves get their own fall dates, and free Kraft bags are available at the Borough Office.[3]
  • For construction material, household material, and brush and yard waste, the Borough points residents to LCSWMA's Frey Farm Landfill at 3049 River Road in Conestoga.[3][4]
  • Paint, gasoline, auto fluids and pool chemicals aren't allowed in Marietta trash. They go to LCSWMA's Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1299 Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster. We don't haul them either.[3]

What we haul and tear down in Marietta

A 14-yard dump trailer on your Marietta lot

Marietta's own rules lean toward exactly what we rent. The Borough's dumpster permit, under Ordinance No. 04-2022, says dumpsters, containers and boxes should be placed on the property lot. Our 14-yard dump trailer gets dropped in your driveway, you fill it at your own pace, and we haul it off when you're done.[5]

If a container can't go on the lot, the Borough says it can't block vehicle or pedestrian traffic or sit in the clear-sight triangle, and one on the street needs reflective warning tape or caution cones. Permits last up to 90 days, extensions can be requested before one expires, and the Borough expects a dumpster to be emptied when full and removed right after the work is finished. Ask the Borough Office whether your project needs the permit before the trailer arrives.[5]

Emptying a whole house in Marietta

With two-thirds of the borough's homes built before 1940 and more than a quarter of residents 65 or older, a Marietta whole-house cleanout is often a lifetime of belongings in a house built for another century. The Borough's bulk program can't keep pace with that: two stickered items a week, and appliances only on two dates a year.[2][3]

We start with a room-by-room walkthrough, and anything you flag stays. Then we carry it all out, from the attic boxes to the chest freezer in the cellar, take usable pieces to donation drop-offs and make as many truck loads as the house calls for. Most full houses take one full day; big estates or heavy hoarding situations can take two. We finish broom-clean and can coordinate with your realtor, estate attorney or family.
