House Cleanouts in Shrewsbury, PA
For the family house after a move to assisted living, an estate, or a downsizing that finally has a date.
A house cleanout in Shrewsbury is usually about a person before it’s about stuff. The borough’s median age is 51.9 and more than a quarter of its residents (26.3%) are 65 or older; the township is older still, at 29.3%. Numbers like that point to the usual reasons a whole house needs emptying: a move to assisted living, a downsizing, or a death in the family.[1][2]
We start with a walk through every room. Anything you flag stays put. The rest is sorted for donation drop-off or disposal, loaded across as many truck loads as it takes, and the house is left broom-clean. Most full houses take one full day; large estates can run two.

One bulk item a week versus a whole house
Shrewsbury’s curbside service is built for a household that’s still living there. The borough allows one bulk item each Friday, scheduled by phone with its contracted hauler, and the township contract includes one large item per collection. Run that against a three-bedroom house with a full basement and a two-car garage, and the dining room alone could take a month of Fridays.[3][4][5]
The weekly item isn’t the only limit. These are the parts of a full house the curbside program won’t handle, as of 2026:
- Furniture and appliances too heavy for two people to lift are refused in both the borough and the township.[6][7][8]
- Refrigerators, freezers, and window air conditioners with Freon have to be scheduled with the hauler separately.[6][7][8]
- Leftovers from old remodeling projects, like spare cabinets or drywall scraps, count as construction debris and aren’t collected at the curb.[3][7]
- Regular yard waste pickup isn’t offered under either contract, which matters when the garden was let go a few seasons back.[9][10]
Electronics and hazardous leftovers in an estate
Estates often hold several generations of televisions: the console set in the basement, a tube set in the guest room, the flat screen in the den. Pennsylvania’s Covered Device Recycling Act has kept TVs, computers, monitors, and peripherals like printers and keyboards out of household trash since 2013, and licensed haulers and transfer stations may not knowingly accept them for disposal. York County residents can recycle electronics free at the Resource Recovery Center, up to five TVs per visit. Point them out on the walkthrough so they get their own plan.[11][12][13]
Basement and garage shelves are the other catch. We don’t take paint, chemicals, propane tanks, or liquids. York County holds two free household hazardous waste collections a year, one in spring and one in fall, with registration required.[14]
Working with family, realtors, and estate attorneys
We coordinate with whoever is handling the house: a realtor working toward a listing date, an estate attorney, a property manager, or the one sibling who still lives nearby. Text photos room by room and William will price it before anyone commits. Because so few Shrewsbury homes are rentals (about 20% in the borough and 14% in the township), a cleanout here is more likely to be run by an owner or a family than by a landlord.[1][2]
