Our dumpster rental in Lancaster, PA is a 14-yard dump trailer. We deliver it to your driveway, you fill it on your own timeline, and we haul it away when you're done. In most towns that's the whole story. In the City of Lancaster, where the trailer can sit matters more than anything else on this page, so here's the straight version.

The City's dumpster permit, and the line about trailers

The City of Lancaster requires a dumpster permit from its Bureau of Engineering. The permit gets posted on the container and on the door or front window of the property, it's good for 90 days, and it can't be renewed; after that, a new one is required.[1]

The permit's rules for containers on the street are detailed:[1]

  • No taller than 5 feet, marked with reflective material, kept covered, never filled above the rim, and set within 12 inches of the curb.[1]
  • A 10-foot travel lane left clear, at least 20 feet from a fire hydrant, and at least 25 feet from an intersection, driveway or alley.[1]
  • The roadway protected with plywood or similar, and the permit holder responsible for any road damage.[1]
  • No-parking signs come from the Lancaster City Police; metered spaces are reserved through the Lancaster Parking Authority.[1]
  • And the line that matters for us: trailer parking is not permitted under this permit.[1]

So in the city, the trailer goes off the street

Our dumpster is a trailer, so the City's street permit doesn't cover it. In Lancaster city it belongs in a driveway or on a private lot, either yours or one you have permission to use. The permit application doesn't address trailers on private property; if you're unsure about your spot, ask the City's Bureau of Engineering before delivery day.[1]

That rules out a lot of city addresses. Only about 12 percent of the City's homes are single-family detached, so plenty of houses simply have no off-street spot for a trailer. If that's yours, skip the rental. Our junk removal crew loads the truck for you, and nothing has to be parked anywhere while you work.[2]

Lancaster Township is friendlier ground for a driveway drop: about 43 percent of homes there are detached.[3]

Appliances run on their own track in the city

Lancaster treats large appliances separately from everything else. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, washers, dryers, water heaters and microwaves are left out of weekly trash and go only on the City's monthly white goods collection, with a tag from the Treasury Office; that program recovers refrigerant gases. If your project includes an appliance, tell us before it goes in the trailer.[4]
