Most calls about a hoarder cleanout in York, PA come from someone who has already tried the slow way. They've filled the cans every trash day for months and the house still looks the same. That isn't a failure on anybody's part. It's arithmetic.

William takes these jobs personally. There's no lecture and no gossip, and what we see in the house stays with us. We sort with you, save what matters, take usable things to donation drop-offs and haul the rest.

Why the weekly trash can't dig out a hoarded York home

Every program around York is sized for normal living. City households get six bags per collection day and up to five scheduled large items a week, but the City says bags or boxes of anything don't go through the large-item program. In a packed house, bags and boxes are most of what there is.[1][2]

The townships are tighter. York Township takes one large item a week, and only if two people can lift it. Springettsbury allows one large item per trash day and one to three 32-gallon bags or cans a week, or a single 96-gallon toter. At that rate, a single cluttered bedroom could take a season.[3][4][5]

The City's Clean Sweeps won't help here either. They clear trash and debris from sidewalks and streets in targeted areas, and the City says they aren't large-item pickups.[6]

Bedbugs, narrow halls and one front door

If there are bedbugs in the house, the City requires any large item showing signs of them to be bagged and sealed before it goes to the curb. Mention it on the first call so William can plan the day around it.[1]

About 49% of city homes were built before 1940 and only about a fifth are detached, so a lot of York hoarder jobs happen in attached houses with tight stairwells and no back way out. We clear a path from the front door first, then work inward one room at a time.[7]

What turns up in a hoard, and where it goes in York County

We don't take hazardous waste or liquids, so these get set aside as we find them:

  • Cans of stain, solvents, pool and garden chemicals, old fuel: York County runs household hazardous waste days in spring and fall, free for county residents, with registration required. Between events the Resource Recovery Center takes most of it with household waste for a fee, though not pool chemicals, pressurized gas tanks or mercury devices.[8][9]
  • Stacks of dead TVs and computer towers: Pennsylvania bars them from the trash, and licensed haulers and transfer stations may not knowingly accept them for disposal. County residents can drop them free at the Resource Recovery Center or the Fairview and Penn Township recycling centers, five TVs per visit.[10][11]
  • Mail, photos and paperwork: sorting and saving is part of the job, so tell us what to watch for before we start.
