Shed Removal in York, PA
City lot or township back yard, the old shed comes down, every piece gets hauled, and you're left with a bare spot.
Shed removal in York, PA can mean a backyard inside the City of York or one in a nearby township such as Springettsbury or York Township. Each one writes its own permit rules.
The job itself doesn't change: we tear the shed down, clear out whatever is still inside, haul all of it, and leave the spot clean. William prices it from photos and confirms the number before anything comes down.

Inside the City: start with the permit office
The City of York says plainly that sheds and decks require a permit, and that work described as removing or demolishing a structure will very likely need a building permit. Applications go through the Bureau of Permits and Inspections.[1]
Only about 22% of City homes are single detached houses, so a lot of city sheds sit in small back yards where the way out is a gate or the alley, not a lawn and a driveway. We plan the carry-out around that.[2]
Springettsbury Township: size, setbacks and paperwork
Springettsbury lists building demolition among the work that needs a building permit under the UCC. If a new shed is going where the old one stood, the township's size rules matter too: one of 150 square feet or less, no taller than 8 feet, can sit behind the house at least 3 feet from the side and rear lines, but it still needs a Residential Permit Application with a site plan. Anything bigger is treated as an accessory building with a 10-foot rear setback.[3][4]
Permits have to be secured before work starts, residential reviews take 10 to 15 days, and a permit expires after a year. If the replacement shed is already ordered, build that into the calendar.[4]
York Township: removal is written right into the rule
York Township states that the Uniform Construction Code covers removal and demolition of every building or structure, and that a building permit is required for them. Even where a building permit isn't needed, a zoning permit may be. The permit has to be in hand before work starts and displayed at the site, and residential reviews can take up to 15 business days.[5]
Housing there is newer than in the City, with a median year built of 1982, and about 54% of homes are single detached. More detached houses means more back yards, and more sheds that have finally gone soft at the floor.[6]
Why a shed doesn't fit the trash can or the drop-off
None of this is a knock on the local programs. They're built for household trash, and a shed is a small building:
- City trash takes lumber only when it's cut to 3 feet or less and bundled under 40 pounds, and each bundle counts as one of your six bags. A 10x12 shed is a lot of 3-foot bundles.[7][8]
- The City's large-item program refuses lumber, fencing sections, and bags or boxes of anything.[7]
- York County's Small Load Drop-Off limits lumber and siding to 6-foot pieces and shingles to one pickup or small trailer load per trip. It doesn't accept metal siding, concrete or asbestos material at all.[9]
- Springettsbury's curbside large-item pickup turns away construction material like treated lumber, shingles, doors and windows, and York Township's hauler doesn't collect construction materials.[10][11]
