Large Item Pickup in York, PA
The City's large-item program covers a lot. For what it doesn't, or the week you can't wait, text us a photo.
Large item pickup in York, PA starts with a program most city residents already have: the City's own scheduled large-item collection. It's a good program. It also has a calendar, a weekly cap, and a list of things it won't touch, and that's where we come in.
We pick up from the curb or carry it out of the house, one item or a full load, priced by how much room it takes in the truck.
How the City of York's large-item program works
- Curbside customers get up to five household furniture, appliance or other approved bulky items per week, year-round, as part of regular service.[1]
- Every item has to be scheduled 7 to 10 days ahead. Unscheduled large items aren't collected.[1]
- For pickup the following week, call the City's Large Item line before 3 p.m. on Wednesday.[1]
- Set items out after 5 p.m. the night before, and have them at the pickup point by 6 a.m.[1]
- Up to two passenger tires off the rim can ride with regular trash, each counting as a bag. Tires still on the rim have to be scheduled as a large item.[1]
What the City says to handle privately
The City lists these as items residents have to deal with on their own:[1]
Electronics are their own category. Under a 2013 Pennsylvania law, TVs, computers and computer accessories are banned from collection, and the City sends residents to recycling programs like the York County Solid Waste Authority's.[1]
If you're in York Township or Springettsbury
The townships go one item at a time. York Township allows one large item a week with regular trash, liftable by two people. Refrigerators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers can't go out with regular trash; they need a special pickup booked with the hauler.[2]
Springettsbury allows one large item per trash day, scheduled at least a day before collection. Its guidelines turn away TVs and electronics, tires on rims, auto parts, and construction material such as drywall, brick, treated lumber, shingles, doors and windows.[3][4]
Where we fit in
None of this is a reason to skip the City's program. If you've got a couch and a washer and can wait for your slot, use it. We're the better call when:
- The item is on the handle-privately list, like a run of old fence, a stack of lumber or a pile of boxes.
- You can't wait out the 7-to-10-day scheduling window. Call or text, and William will tell you when we can be there.[1]
- You've got more than five items in the City, or more than one in the townships. We take single items through full loads, from the curb or from inside.
