An estate cleanout in York, PA usually starts with a phone call from somebody who just inherited a job they never applied for. Maybe it's a brick house in the city with three floors of stairs. Maybe it's a split-level in York Township where the basement and garage have been filling up since the 1980s.

Either way, the local trash programs were built for a week of household waste, not forty years of it.

What York's houses tell you about the job ahead

Inside the City of York, roughly half the homes (49.3%) date from before 1940, and only about 22% are single detached houses. An estate there tends to mean narrow staircases, a steep basement stair, and a third-floor bedroom that nobody has opened in years.[1]

York Township looks different. About 22.5% of its residents are 65 or older, well above the city's 13%, and its median home was built in 1982, with about 54% single detached. That adds up to a lot of parents who stayed put in houses with a garage, a basement and often a shed, all of it full. County-wide the 65-plus share is 18.8%.[2][1][3]

Why curbside pickup can't settle an estate

The City's large-item program allows five scheduled pieces a week, each booked 7 to 10 days out. A three-bedroom house with a full attic would tie up months of slots. And the City says bags or boxes of anything have to be handled privately, and an estate is mostly boxes. Pianos, organs and pool tables are on that private-handling list too.[4]

York Township allows one large item a week that two people can lift, and appliances with refrigerant need a special pickup booked with the hauler. One more wrinkle: the township treats condos, apartments and rentals as commercial, so if the parent rented, the curbside rules may belong to a different hauler entirely. Next door in Springettsbury, it's one item per trash day, booked with the hauler a day ahead.[5][6]

Three things for the executor to sort out first

  • TVs and computers. City collection won't take them under the 2013 state law. York County residents can recycle electronics free at the Resource Recovery Center or at the Fairview and Penn Township recycling centers, up to five TVs per visit.[4][7]
  • Basement chemicals. We don't take paint, chemicals or propane tanks. The county holds two household hazardous waste days a year, spring and fall, free for residents, and you have to register. Dates are posted on ycswa.com. Latex paint isn't accepted at those events.[8][9]
  • The piano or organ. Per the county's guidance on instruments, a working one can be donated or resold, and electronic organs and keyboards can go to the county's electronics recycling program. If nobody wants it, our piano removal page covers the heavy part.[10]

How William runs a York estate cleanout

It starts with a room-by-room walkthrough, and anything you flag stays where it is. Reusable furniture and housewares go to donation drop-offs, we run as many loads as the house needs, and we leave it broom-clean. William will work with the realtor, the estate attorney or the family. Most houses take one full day; a large estate can run two.
