A basement cleanout is mostly a stairs job. Everything down there has to come up a narrow flight, around a tight turn, under a low beam and out the door, which is exactly why it's been sitting there for years. We do the carrying. Soggy cardboard, a dead chest freezer, the old sectional, shelves of canning jars, a workbench full of who-knows-what: point at it, and our two-person crew brings it up and hauls it off. William confirms the price before we start, and we sweep the floor when it's empty.

How the job goes

  1. Step 1
    Show us the stairs

When you text photos, include the stairway, the turn at the bottom and the biggest thing down there. Those three pictures tell William most of what he needs.

  2. Step 2
    Unplug and empty

Unplug the freezer and the dehumidifier a day ahead, take out the food and dump the water bucket. We don't take liquids.

  3. Step 3
    Confirm the price

You get an upfront price, based on how much truck space it all takes, before anything moves.

  4. Step 4
    Up and out

We clear a path from the bottom step back into the corners, bringing everything up and loading as we go.

  5. Step 5
    A swept floor

Once it's empty we sweep it out, so you can finally see the floor you've got.

Older houses, tighter basements

York County's median home was built in 1976, and the older boroughs run much older. In York city the median year built is 1941, and 49.3% of homes date to 1939 or earlier. Red Lion's median is also 1941, and Wrightsville's is 1944.[1][2][3][4]

Older basements tend to mean steeper steps, low joists and damp corners. Plan on a basement in an older house being slower carrying than a modern walk-out, and tell us about the stairs up front.

Freezers, spare fridges and dehumidifiers

Basements are where cold appliances go to retire. Dehumidifiers, chest freezers and spare refrigerators all hold refrigerant, which federal law says can't be vented. York County's Small Load Drop-Off takes them and has the Freon removed before they're recycled.[5][6]

Dehumidifiers trip people up: because of the refrigerant, York County's electronics recycling won't take them. And any freezer needs the food cleared out first.[7][8]

Tearing out an old finished basement?

If you're pulling down paneling, drywall, carpet or ceiling tile yourself, know the county limits. York County's Small Load Drop-Off takes drywall, insulation and ceiling tile only in small amounts, two 42-gallon contractor bags per trip, and carpet only in pieces 6 feet or shorter that one person can carry.[9]

Asbestos isn't accepted there, and we don't take it either. If something down there might be asbestos, leave it alone and mention it when you send photos.[9]
